A Memphis basketball legend from Melrose High School in the Bluff City, William Bedford, a 7’0” center star at Memphis State University was drafted by Phoenix as the 6th pick overall in the 1986 NBA draft.
A 7-footer who attended Melrose High, Bedford was a key member of the 1985 team that reached the NCAA Final Four. He ranks 26th on the career scoring chart with 1,225 points.
William spent 7 years in the NBA before retiring. His professional career included playing for the Phoenix Suns, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Washington Bullets, and the San Antonio Spurs. His career highlights include a NBA Championship (Detroit 1990), Third Team All- American (1986), and First Team All-Metro conference (1986).
