Ep. 12 Tony Harris | Basketball

Real talk with Tony Harris: We chat about his days growing up in Memphis, the hallowed halls of East High School and his 40 pieces, the brights lights of LA and the call of the Memphis bluffs, the pivotal moment of his basketball career and the moment time stood still and he saw his higher purpose.

Tony Harris, born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee first made a name for himself as the “40 piece” king and point guard on the basketball court at East High School.  His high school honors included the prestigious McDonald’s All American and the Tennessee Class AAA Mr. Basketball.   Tony and his squad won the state title in 1996.   Coincidently, Tony was on the staff when East won another state title in 2012.

After college,Harris took his talents to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (and rumors of recruiting violations ensued) – this is discussed in this podcast episode. Tony college accolades include Freshman of the Year in the SEC conference. John R Wooden award candidate 1998–2000 to name a few.

After college and seven years of playing pro ball overseas, Tony called it quits and officially retired from competitive basketball.

“Man, it was very relishing,” Harris, during a recent interview, said of finishing his undergraduate requirements. “I look back at it as a pivotal point in my life. I knew that I couldn’t play basketball the rest of my life. I knew eventually the crowd would stop cheering. I knew getting my degree would open doors for me.”  [- Bleacher Report (05.08.14)]

After retirement It didn’t take long for the former University of Tennessee standout to return to Knoxville to complete the final 36 hours of his undergraduate studies.

Harris earned his degree in Psychology with a minor in Childcare within six months after his professional career ended.

Tony Harris lives in Memphis, Tennessee where he and his wife, Alena, have a financial education/consulting and insurance business. Tony also coaches youth basketball.
