Real talk with Alvin Sims: growing up in Kentucky, how he fell in love with basketball, his summer with Kobe, and the run to the Elite 8. He dishes on the challenges of pro ball and what it’s like to live and play overseas, the career-ending injury, waiting to get THAT call and the harsh long road back to success.
Sims grew up in Paris, Kentucky prime horse country a few miles outside Lexington. A prosperous career at Paris High School and multiple offers from Div 1 colleges, Sims ultimately picked University of Louisville and Coach Denny Crum.
During college and the Elite 8 run of 1997, Sims was in the spotlight although did not think about pro ball until mid-way through college. After 2 years at Louisville, Alvin switched majors from Commercial Art to a sports related major allowing him to focus more on basketball and pushing his education to the back burner (Alvin did complete his goal and graduated from Louisville in Aug 2014). Despite favorable responses from scouts and talk that he would be picked up in the 1997 NBA draft, the reality was cold and harsh as he went undrafted.
Alvin Sims did not give up and continued to hone his skills and stay in shape. Sims’ pro career started with the Quad City Thunder (CBA) then a stint in Greece before he was picked up by the Phoenix Suns. After being waived by the Suns, Sims went back overseas with time spent Italy, France, Greece, Lebanon, Iran, Austria, UK, Cyprus, and Venezuela.
After a foot injury and an unknown recovery timeline, the calls stopped coming. Listen in to learn more about his long slow entrance into his 5th quarter and how he got to where he is today.
Alvin Sims is a Behavior Specialist with SESI Schools in Davenport, Iowa and is the founder/owner of S5 Academy Basketball Fundamental Enhancement Training.
