Ep. 22 Harlyn Wyatt | Basketball

Real talk with Harlyn Wyatt: We chat about growing up in Atlanta, the influence of her grandmother and her legacy.  The transition to college hoops and the underlying question of what to do next.  The grit and grind that got her to Las Vegas and then Gardner Webb. The easy decision to come to Memphis, her value now on and off the court and how she can impact others the way her grandmother impacted her.

Wyatt comes to the Bluff City after spending the past two seasons at Gardner-Webb with Simmons. As an assistant coach and the Recruiting Coordinator, Wyatt helped the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a 45-20 record, including a 29-5 overall record this past season and the Big South Regular Season and Tournament Championship.

“Harlyn is an up-and-coming coach that I’ve had the opportunity to work with the last two years and her emphatic love for the game and enthusiasm for the development of these young women on and off the court will make an immediate impact in our program,” said Simmons. “She has been able to develop our post players into dominant forces in the paint with her willingness to put in the time on the court and has an infectious personality and work ethic that will help take our program to another level.”

Helping to develop GWU’s post player presence, Wyatt coached the Big South Player of the Year, Jhessyka Williams, where she surpassed the 2,000 career points mark and was an All-American candidate during the 2022-23 season. The post trio of Williams, Alasia Smith and Layken Cox would combine for more than half of Gardner-Webb’s points last season.

Along with her coaching responsibilities, Wyatt led all recruiting activity for the program, created scouting reports, scheduled games and worked as the team’s Camp Director.

Prior to GWU, Wyatt spent two seasons as a Graduate Assistant Coach at the University of Nevada, Reno. During her time with the Wolf Pack, Wyatt aided in player development, recruiting and scouting opponents.

Wyatt is no stranger to the American Athletic Conference, spending her collegiate career at Tulane University where she finished ranked 8th all-time with 110 career blocks. Wyatt would finish her career with the Green Wave with nearly 700 points, 571 rebounds and a career field goal percentage of 48%. She would also capture the program’s single season blocks record in her senior season with 37.

During her time in the Big Easy, Wyatt was named a team captain, helped her team to two Women’s National Invitational Tournament appearances, was a member of the department’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was a 2019 WBCA “So You Want to Be a Coach” participant.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Wyatt was ranked as the No. 2 post player in Georgia and was an All-State and All-Region selection while leading her team to the state Class 5A Finals.

Wyatt graduated from Tulane in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Psychology. She obtained her Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration with an emphasis in Athletics from Nevada in 2021.
